Shift by Samuel Kozah

Every Tuesday night, a man in Abuja closes his eyes and rebuilds his childhood compound in Kaduna room by room, down to the grain of the floor mats — a private penance for a shift-trade with his brother that ended in a factory accident fifty years ago. Kozah turns grief into architecture: the house lets him in only as far as it wants to, and this Tuesday it finally makes him climb the ladder he’s avoided his whole life.
