This Saturday will be a momentous day for Nigerian musician and global superstar Burna Boy. Not only will the 32-year-old be performing at TD Garden Saturday night, but Boston has also officially named March 2 as “Burna Boy Day” in the city12.
Nigerian singer and Grammy winner, Burna Boy, has been honored by the City of Boston, Massachusetts, in the USA, with his own day. The official proclamation recognizes Burna Boy’s outstanding performances and impactful advocacy work. Signed by Councillor Ruthzee Louijeune of the Boston City Council, the declaration celebrates the artist’s contributions to music and cultural diversity3.
Why Burna Boy?
The Legacy of Burna Boy
Burna Boy’s legacy serves as a reminder of possibility, urging us to continue amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked. As the largest source of African immigration in the United States, Nigeria holds a special place in Boston’s cultural tapestry. Massachusetts is one of the top 10 states with the highest Nigerian-born population, according to the American Community Survey.
Grammy Awards and Beyond
Burna Boy’s accolades speak volumes. He clinched the Best Global Music Album award for “Twice As Tall” at the premiere ceremony of the 63rd GRAMMY Awards. In October 2022, he was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MON) for his achievements in music. Rolling Stone even ranked him number 197 on its list of the 200 greatest singers of all time. And in 2023, he secured The Headies Afrobeats Single of the Year and Song of the Year for “Last Last.”
Boston’s Cultural Celebration
Now, therefore, be it resolved: March 2, 2024, is designated Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston. Let’s celebrate the vibrancy of afrobeats, cultural diversity, and the indomitable spirit of Burna Boy!
