The highly anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s acclaimed novel Children of Blood and Bone is set to feature a stellar ensemble cast, including Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Thuso Mbedu, and Damson Idris. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for The Woman King and The Old Guard, the film is scheduled for release on 15th January 2027, with plans for an IMAX debut.

Set in the mythical African kingdom of Orïsha, the narrative follows Zélie, portrayed by Thuso Mbedu, on her quest to restore magic to her people and challenge an oppressive monarchy. The cast also includes Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Tosin Cole as Tzain, Viola Davis as Mama Agba, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, and Lashana Lynch as Jumoke.

Author Tomi Adeyemi, whose novel has been lauded for its rich portrayal of Black characters and its commentary on contemporary social issues, expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation, stating, “I wanted to write a story that’s so good and so Black that everyone’s going to have to read it — even if they’re racist.

Filming is set to commence in South Africa in the coming weeks, with additional casting underway, including an open call for actors residing in Nigeria.

Dark Horizons

The film’s release is poised to be a significant cultural event, celebrating Black talent and storytelling on an unprecedented scale. Audiences can anticipate a cinematic experience that combines powerful performances with a compelling narrative, bringing Adeyemi’s vibrant world of Orïsha to life.
