We are calling this issue Tectonics. In geology, tectonic plates are the massive, subterranean slabs that quietly grind against one another, eventually rupturing the surface to create new continents and towering mountains. In architecture, tectonics refers to the art of honest construction: the beautiful, visible joining of raw materials.
Both definitions demand an engagement with what is real, heavy, and foundational. And both perfectly describe what we venture to spotlight in this issue.
Culture is not built in a vacuum. It is built from the ground up, with the materials we have inherited, through the sheer force of our collective will. This issue is a testament to the friction, the heavy lifting, and the beauty of honest construction.
