The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the sudden death of veteran singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu. The beloved artist, often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” passed away on the evening of July 30, 2024, at the age of 72.
Onwenu reportedly collapsed while performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, held at Banana Island, Lagos. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious career in the 1980s with the release of her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She quickly rose to prominence with hits like “One Love,” becoming a household name in Nigeria and beyond. Her music often addressed social issues, earning her a reputation as a voice for change.
In addition to her musical achievements, Onwenu was a talented actress, starring in several Nollywood films, including “Widow’s Cot” and “Half of a Yellow Sun.” Her contributions to the arts were recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout her career.
Onwenu was also deeply involved in politics and social advocacy. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was appointed the Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013. Her dedication to social causes and her advocacy for women’s rights made her a respected figure in Nigerian society.
Her passing has left a void in the hearts of many who admired her talent, grace, and unwavering commitment to social justice. Tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and public figures, all celebrating her remarkable legacy.
