In a landscape where 60,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded to streaming sites daily, the music industry has reached a critical inflection point. To address this, TBWA\Chiat\Day LA and the cultural art project Jazz Is Dead have launched “Played by Humans”—a movement and blockchain-backed stamp of authenticity that allows artists to verify their work as 100% human-made.

The initiative stems from a sobering statistic: 97% of listeners currently cannot distinguish between AI-generated and human-made music. Through a dedicated platform at playedbyhumans.org, musicians can upload their tracks for analysis. Those that meet the authenticity threshold are awarded a digital and physical stamp—a visual assurance that real human sweat and soul are behind the sound.

For African creatives, whose music is often deeply rooted in live instrumentation and complex polyrhythms, this movement offers a layer of protection against algorithmic commodification. As Jazz Is Dead co-founder Adrian Younge suggests, real artistry isn’t just about the arrangement of notes—it’s about a feeling that cannot be replicated by code. The “Played by Humans” stamp doesn’t reject technology; it celebrates the irreplaceable humanity of the creator.
