Style House Files and Lagos Fashion Week have partnered with Selfridges, one of the world’s leading department stores, to bring Woven Threads, a pop-up exhibition that showcases the work of African designers who are inspired by traditional craft and circular design practices, to London.
Woven Threads is a digital showcase that was launched in 2021 as part of Lagos Fashion Week’s initiative to promote responsible fashion production on the continent. The showcase features designers who are innovating and collaborating with artisan collectives in their ecosystem, using techniques such as weaving, dyeing, embroidery, and upcycling to create unique and sustainable collections.
The pop-up exhibition at Selfridges will run from May 9th to June 20th, 2023, and will feature 18 designers from across Africa, including AAKS, Abiola Olusola, Andrea Iyamah, Buzigahill, Christie Brown, Eki Kere, Elexiay, Emmy Kasbit, Eva Sonaike, Kadiju, Katush, Lisa Folawiyo, NKWO, Obida, Orange Culture, Shem Paronelli, Taztopia, This Is Us and TJWHO.
The exhibition aims to celebrate the diversity and creativity of African fashion, as well as highlight the social and environmental benefits of artisanal practices. According to Omoyemi Akerele, Founder and Executive Director of Lagos Fashion Week:
Style House Files and Lagos Fashion Week are committed to supporting and developing the African fashion industry through collaborations, community impact, and co-creation. They believe that fashion should be accessible and inclusive and are proud to partner with Selfridges, a company that shares similar values and commitment to excellence.
The Woven Threads pop-up exhibition is a unique opportunity for fashion lovers to discover and appreciate the beauty and richness of African fashion and culture. Don’t miss it!
