16-year-old sprint sensation Gout Gout has broken Usain Bolt’s under-18 200m record. Gout clocked an astonishing 20.04 seconds at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Brisbane, surpassing Bolt’s previous record of 20.13 seconds set in 2003.
Gout, who has South Sudanese heritage, has been making waves in the athletics world with his remarkable performances. Just a day before his record-breaking run, he clocked a wind-assisted 10.04 seconds in the 100m, marking the fourth-fastest time ever for an under-18 athlete.
Reflecting on his achievement, Gout said, “These are adult times, and me, just a kid—I’m running them. It’s going to be a great future for sure.” His coach, James Templeton, added, “We want his life to be as normal as possible, but the world is starting to take notice. What he’s achieved at his age is extraordinary.”
Gout’s performance has drawn comparisons to Bolt, but the young athlete is determined to carve out his own legacy. “It’s pretty cool being compared to Bolt, but I’m Gout Gout, and I’m here to make my own name. If I can reach the level he achieved, it would be an amazing accomplishment,” he remarked.
With an endorsement deal with Adidas already secured, Gout is set to train with Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles in the United States next month. His sights are now set on the 2025 World Athletics Championships and the 2032 Olympics, which will be hosted by Australia.
